名詞「variety」は日本人の学者によって、論文執筆の際にたびたび誤用される語です。この名詞には3種類の用法があります。ここではそれらの用法の特徴を説明します。
I. 第1用法
意味:いろいろ、異なるいくつか、異なる種類。
役割:複数の異なるものを集合として指すこと。
- We used a variety of methods to derive these results.
- A variety of interesting results follow immediately from this theorem.
ここで最も注目すべき点は、「variety」が複数のものを指すことによって複数形名詞として扱われるということです。よって2のように、「variety」が主語である場合はその動詞も複数形となります。
II. 第2用法
意味:多様性。
役割:ひとつ、または複数のものが示す様子を指すこと。
- The most important point to note here is the great variety of adaptive behavior exhibited within the Microhexura genus.
- In this particular case, variety is not necessarily desirable.
この第2用法で「variety」は複数の異なるもの自体ではなく、むしろ複数のものが全体として示す「変化」を意味します。その変化(つまり、多様性)はひとつのものなので、この用法において「variety」は単数形名詞です。また例文2が示すように、第2用法では「variety」が不可算名詞と見なされる場合が多くあります。
III. 第3用法
意味:種類。
役割:複数のタイプの中のひとつを指すこと。
- This variety of chaotic behavior is often seen in strongly perturbed gravitational orbits.
- We investigate a variety of mineral deposit usually found only in the presence of large amounts of water.
この用法では「variety」は、単数形かつ可算名詞となります。
